A Belgian and two Frenchmen wanted on terrorism charges in Belgium now want to be freed from a Kenyan jail where they are serving a year for illegal entry into the country.
Belgium’s judicial authorities say they belong to Al-Qaeda and have links with Somalia’s Al-Shabaab.
The authorities say they have indicted them together with Hassan Kafi, a terror suspect in a Belgian jail, on 32 counts of terrorism.
Interpol has characterised the trio as “armed and dangerous” in a Red Notice issued on July 7 this year, but their lawyer says they should be allowed to walk out of jail after paying a fine.
According to court and Interpol records, Kafi, Mustapha Bouyabaren, Rachid Benomari and Ben Abdalla Ismail left Belgium early April 2011, and entered Kenya on April 20 after travelling through Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt and Tanzania.
Kafi was arrested in Lamu on May 1 last year and sentenced to six months in jail and then deported to Belgium while his alleged accomplices were arrested early last month in Malindi.
