World, Sudan: The Sudanese Government holds the so-called Sudan Liberation Movement of Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) responsible for the blatant attack on UNAMID troops last Saturday.
A statement issued by Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the attack, saying it was another evidence that the rebel movement is not only against peace but unwilling to stop targeting those working for peace including to create conducive environment for the return of the Internally-Displaced Persons to their original villages to resume their normal life.
The SLM-MM and the so-called Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) constitute the major threat to peace in the region, the statement said, citing the recent assassination of the signatory leaders of the Justice and Equality Movement.
The Sudanese government urged the international community to take necessary steps to end atrocities of these criminal groups and bring them to justice.
The Sudan government extended its sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the heinous aggression that took place at Khor Abeche in South Darfur and also expressed its condolences for Tanzania and UNAMID.
“This attack is a desperate attempt by rebel groups to derail the noble mission being undertaken by UNAMID and to undermine the peace march in Darfur,” the statement further said.
The government stressed that this cowardly attack would not discourage it from continuing its efforts to bring about comprehensive peace to Darfur and to facilitate UNAMID’s mission.
The Sudanese government is committed to conduct urgent investigation into the incident to bring culprits to justice, the statement said.
Seven UN peacekeepers werekilled and 17 injured during the attack in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan. The incident happened near the mission’s base at Manawashi, north of Nyala.
A UN statement said all the dead were Tanzanians.
