Nominated MP, Mohamed Affey has launched his bid to become a Senator for Wajir County.
Mr Affey, a former Kenya’s envoy to Somalia, said he would vie for the seat on Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement party.
A former teacher, Mr Adan Omar Enow from Wajir North, has also declared interest in the seat. Mr Affey comes from Wajir South.
Addressing the media at Parliament’s Media Centre, Mr Affey said he would use his experience in diplomacy and the public service to harness the huge potential of the County for the good of the residents.
Wajir has the largest concentration of Camel and livestock and also boasts of untapped underground water. The county, however, has witnessed clan conflicts over resources and representation, a situation Mr Affey said he would address once elected.
“I have been involved in the reconciliation efforts in Somalia-the most dangerous country in the world. So have the capability to reconcile all the clans in Wajir County using my long experience in diplomacy and my service in government,” said Mr Affey.
The positions of the Senators have come with the new Constitution promulgated on August 27, 2010. There will be 47 Senators representing the 47 counties. There will be 16 women nominees, two youth representatives and two representing the disabled.
