The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) comprising of Christians, Muslims, Hindus and the Provincial Administration, has condemned the Sunday bomb attack at St Polycarp ACK in Juja Road estate, Nairobi.

A nine-year-old boy was killed in the attack that also left nine other children nursing multiple injuries.

Police have confirmed an improvised explosive device was used in attacking the church.

The attackers placed the explosive near a Sunday school class before detonating it from a distance.

During a joint communiqué at the church compound, the group led by Archbishop Eliud Wabukala, Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (Supkem) deputy General Secretary Sheikh Adan Wachu and Nairobi Provincial Commissioner Njoroge Ndirangu called for an expeditious probe and prosecution of perpetrators.

While calling for a speedy adoption of the Terrorism Prevention Bill 2012, Wabukala urged Kenyans not to fall victims of the targeted unrest through cruel provocation to violence, noting all religious groups would continue to live harmoniously.

However, so far, police are yet to gather fundamental information or make arrest of those believed to be behind the attack.

“Our security agencies are in top gear but we have not made any arrest so far. Only the three suspects are still in police custody but at the moment we don’t have any information that they are responsible for the attack,” Ndirangu said.

release of journalists

On his part, Adan called for unconditional immediate release of the three Somali journalists still held in custody.

“We are concerned over the reported reactionary acts of stone throwing in mosques. No one should cite religion as an excuse to the heinous act of the murder of innocent children. This is a cowardly criminal and evil act that serves no cause that cannot be carried out by a follower of any faith group,” Adan claimed.

Following the 10.30am attack, three Somali journalists from Horn Cable TV were held for questioning.
