Watching Kenyan athletes destroy their opponents on Saturday in Daegu, South Korea, to secure double clean sweep in women marathon and 10,000m races was certainly the big moment for the country in the history of the World Championships.

To many, that performance was not good for the spirit of sportsmanship and would kill the discipline; but everyone is in Daegu for one goal, to win gold and the fastest will certainly clinch it.

Kenyan athletes displayed a splendid show of teamwork and individual brilliance to dominate the first two finals of the championships. This performance should be emulated if the country is to seriously stake its claim on the overall title, which for long time the US has won.

It is not every day that Kenya will weather the storm from Ethiopians, Americans and the Middle East athletes to flourish.

Yet, it is exactly what happened, confirming that the standards of athletics in Kenya are superior.

International competitions are of course about bragging rights and for the next two years, the world will always remember that momentarily Kenyans reigned supreme. However, the fact that the nine-day competition has just started should inspire more athletes to do their best.

For the Government, it is time it made true its pledge to build an international academy to help develop and impart better skills to talented sportsmen and women. It will also be important to reward these athletes and give them State commendations for their good work which promotes the country.
