Kenyatta University will have a double intake this year.
The Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda said that the double intake is one of the measures to reduce a backlog in enrollment.
"We have taken action to reduce the backlog, by inviting you earlier. This year we shall have two intakes: in May and in September. Students won’t stay at home for two years," said Prof Mugenda at the University’s Bishop’s Square while receiving 3,800 first year students.
Students admitted yesterday are those that sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2009. The 2010 candidates will join the institution in September.
"All public universities have been requested to reduce the admission backlog," Prof Mugenda added.
Prof Mugenda who is also the Chairman of Joint Admissions Board (JAB) announced plans to expand KU infrastructure so as to accommodate more students.
"We are putting up a campus in Migori that will serve the lakeside region," she announced.
In February, JAB short-listed only 24, 221 of 81,000 candidates who attained grades C+ and above in the KCSE for regular programmes.
Out of those, 4,031 will go to University of Nairobi, Moi University shall admit 3,727, Kenyatta University (3,611), Egerton University (2,402), and JKUAT (1,182), with the others sharing the rest.
