Considering how long the problem has taken to rectify, lack of electricity at General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters in Ruaraka, Nairobi, has gone beyond sheer technical hitch to negligence.

On April 23, Mr Majanga Juma reported that the camp had been without power for three weeks (Forces of darkness in the city). This was history repeating itself as last year we published a similar complaint from a frustrated "junior officer" (GSU officers without power, August 4).

But Kenya Power and Lighting Company said the responsibility of repairing and maintaining the damaged transformer was GSU’s (KPLC not responsible for repair of GSU transformer, August 11).

Now another officer has written to point out that the crucial security installation remains in the dark more than a month later. The generators used to power sections of the camp are hardly enough to cover the inconvenience and security risk.

If this is not a matter worth the attention of Internal Security Minister George Saitoti, what is?
