Air Uganda has become the latest international airline to fly directly into Mombasa from its Entebbe hub.
The move heralds a new era of air connectivity between landlocked Uganda and Mombasa, which is an important business corridor for many Ugandan entrepreneurs.
Air Uganda will operate three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays.
"Following extensive market research, we have started this service, which will boost regional tourism and business," Air Uganda Head of Sales and Marketing, Jeniffer Musiime, said, after the inaugural direct flight touched down at the Moi International airport on Tuesday.
The Air Uganda aircraft, an MD 87 with a capacity of 99 passengers, brought 25 passengers, and left after a 30-minute turn-around.
Incoming flight
On board the incoming flight were six travel agents, who will be sampling Kenyan Coast tourist attractions at the Leisure Lodge and Golf Resort, Sarova Taita Hills, and Salt Lick Lodges. A group of Kenyan travel agents flew out to Uganda on the return flight for a similar mission.
Meanwhile, Kenya Airports Authority will invest Sh140 million in the construction of a state of the art terminal building at the Lamu airstrip.
