His first expression when he was ushered into the M-Net Big Brother Africa house was, "Whoa! This is one serious digs, man"
So impressed by the new home was Kenya’s nominee to BBA4 Teddy Muthusi that he could hardly contain his delight. And why not? After all his dream of becoming Kenya’s next young millionaire was only a few ‘housemates’ away.
But after only seven days, his hopes were dashed as Big Brother dealt a thunderbolt. "What?" a shocked Teddy wondered when he was called out as the first evictee that Sunday evening.
"At first, I didn’t believe it. I had not seen it coming. At least, not that fast," Teddy told Pulse during an interview on Tuesday.
"I stood there isolated and disillusioned thinking it’s over. The beautiful girls were now coming in. I had just missed the party. How unfair could life get?" he said.
And he continues: "When I got to the airport with Wayoe (from Ghana), I thought, let me drown my sorrows. Before we knew it, the flight had left. I guess I was still working my mind out of all those fantasies and illusions."
The self-proclaimed humorous Mr Nice guy is back home, back to his usual hustle. His mind is made up, he wants to go back to his first love, radio.
"I am jobless. I lost my job as a creative director at Scanad after getting several warnings for swallowing one too many. But I have since learned my lesson and I want to get a job with one of the radio stations because all I want to do is work in the media," he reveals.
Like a cat, the rather social and ambitious former Kenyan representative in BBA4, Teddy, can claim to have lived the proverbial nine lives. Teddy has worked in over three FM radio stations, gotten fired and hired and moved on to take new appointments without looking back.
"I was still working at Scanad when Bob Kioko (then at Nation) came up with the new character accent thing in radio. Carol and Nyambane were at the time top in Morning radio shows. There was Munene Nyaga and Ngatia then me bringing the new twist in radio. And what a big following we got just days after going on air," he recalls.
"Prank shows had just hit the airwaves and I was part of the revolution. But there was conflict of interest between my new assignment and Scanad. I decided to head to Capital FM. But that too never materialised. It was after this that I headed to Hot 96," he remarks.
For Teddy, life is about challenges and facing new frontiers. This, he says, brings the best out of him. He is an extrovert, never afraid to express his true feelings and position even when faced by the worst opposition.
"I joined BBA4 to win the money. But it is good that at the worst, I am back in the limelight and this is an ice breaker as I am no longer a stranger to people. I want to channel my energy into media and I am optimistic that I will get a job with one of the radio stations soon," he asserts.
"Radio is all about chemistry. Whether I come up with a unique show to pump new life into local media or keep my old self, the fact remains, I just have a passion for radio," he concludes.
