Due to advancing technology and the need for cutting costs and time, conducting selection interviews through the telephone is becoming acceptable to many employers.
But human resource experts warn jobseekers that there are some specific dos and don’ts for them if a selection team decides to use such a method in recruitment.
Mr Ben Murage, Sarova Panafric Hotel’s human resource manager says when such a call comes, the strategy is to provide facts that support your resume, with some context about your performance. "Try using numbers and facts to be effective," Murage says. He however cautions candidates against volunteering anything that could disqualify them.
Mr Mugambi Baikwinga, a human resource consultant, advises jobseekers to sound professional because a screening call is not to establish friendship or rapport.
Reschedule The Interview
Surprise interviews are rare, and if they occur, Murage advises candidates to be bold enough to reschedule them no matter how desperate one is.
"You could for instance say you are in a meeting or give whatever excuse. You may suggest a time you can call back and when you do, be prepared for a full-dress interview even if it is not," Murage says.
He says that candidates should then be ready pen and paper, a calculator, the job advertisement and the resume and cover letter sent in response to the advert and a list of your accomplishments which relate to the job you are discussing.
Canddates are cautioned against chewing gum, eating, drinking, or smoke while on phone interview.
Candidates are also advised to stand to aid voice projection.
Baikwinga says applicants should avoid interrupting the interviewer.
You can avoid the disaster by practicing ahead of the interview.
