As cholera death toll hit 81 on Friday and the Nairobi cases keeps increasing, we should prevent further spread of the contagious disease.

It would be tragic if the disease is rampant in the city’s densely populated neighbourhoods — most of which are vulnerable. Worse still, the city is facing acute shortage of clean drinking water.

Hopefully, public health officials will not be caught unawares by the cholera crisis the way water crisis caught the City Council of Nairobi unawares. They should up their vigilance to prevent cholera spread. They must react robustly to the new challenge, particularly in the slums.

Cholera is preventable through proper hygiene. The Government should initiate hygiene awareness campaigns to educate the public on cholera prevention and first aid measures.

This should be done in vulnerable areas such as slums and middle-level estates in towns. It should be part of the wider comprehensive strategy to combat the contagious disease.

In its efforts to combat cholera, the Government should start with cleaning most of the filthy residential areas such as Ongata Rongai, Kitengela, Eastlands, Kibera, Mathare and Kawangware.
