Sammy Kitwara, 22, won the ING 2009 Bay to Breakers race in New York in a course record time of 33:31. The previous record of 33:42 by fellow Kenyan Ismael Kirui was set back in 1993 at the infamous San Francisco 12K. "I feel very well but very hot," Kitwara told reporters after the race. The Kenya Police runner revealed he knew he was going to win because of how he did during training. Compatriot Lineth Chepkurui, 21, came second in the women’s, race in 38:35 ahead of American Olympian Deena Kastor (39:05). Ethiopian Teyba Erkesso won the event in 38:29.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie failed in his bid to reclaim his world 10km road-running at the Bupa Great Run in Manchester. The 36-year-old - holder of 26 world records during his career — eased to victory but failed to better the world best of 27:01 run by Micah Kogo at the end of March.
