Well-maintained hair and a healthy scalp go hand in hand and are part of a good grooming regimen. And because hair is an extension of the scalp, it is necessary to take care of your scalp so that your hair remains in top condition.
I am neither a dermatologist nor a hairdresser, but I know through experience that scalp problems contribute to a bad hair day. Scalp problems range from itching and flaking to dryness.
Some people complain of having an oily scalp and dry hair and vice versa. There are many factors that contribute to scalp problems — dry or cold weather, allergies to food and reaction to some hair products are some of the common causes of scalp problems.
When it is too hot, your scalp tends to itch because of the direct heat of the sun. The itching can also occur when it is too cold. In rainy weather the scalp can be sensitive because hair retains water, and we all know we frequently forget our umbrellas at home.
Cleanliness
Some people have generally sensitive skin that reacts to new gels and creams.
According to Ofafa, my barber, the line between a scalp and hair problem is very thin. "Whenever someone complains about trouble with their hair, I end up finding out that it is the scalp that has the problem and not necessarily the hair," he says.
I have experienced this problem myself and have come to realise that good scalp care is the secret to good hair.
Basically, your scalp has to be clean to be healthy. If you keep your hair short, your scalp should be washed with mild shampoo every day. Fortunately, washing the scalp can easily be done at home. In fact, it would be quite extravagant to go to the barbershop for this simple routine. If you wear long or dreadlocked hair, then wash at least once every two weeks. It is better to get your dreadlocks washed at the barbershop, where a professional can do a more thorough job than you would be able to.
Tips for a healthy scalp
Wash regularly. Keeping your scalp clean is key to minimising clogged pores and other scalp problems. Use a gentle shampoo.
Scalp massage helps promote good blood flow to the scalp.
Avoid drying problems. One of the main causes of dry scalp is shampooing with water that is too hot. This can strip essentials oils from the skin and cause dryness — wash hair in lukewarm water. Excessive blow-drying of the hair can also promote a dry scalp.
Know the ingredients of your shampoo. Mild shampoos, with an acid rather than an alkaline base are recommended. Always check whether it contains harmful chemicals.
Get good moisture for your scalp. Like your skin, your hair needs constant good moisturising.
