When AJ Auxerre and Harambee Stars striker , Denis Oliech hit the streets of Nairobi two years ago with an elegant top-of-the range Chrysler 300C SRT-8 Quick Spin, even this head turned in marvel.

And I was not the only one amazed at the powerful elegance the black sedan displayed as it glided along the city streets.

Oliech’s ride was captured in all newspapers and aroused so much interest that DT Dobie, the franchise holders for the brand, decided to stock the vehicle last year.

While we are shouting ourselves hoarse cheering European football stars — the players we often idolise and loathe in equal measure — it is a well documented fact that they smile all the way to the bank.

And is there a better way for them to express their largesse to us ‘mere mortals’ than turning out with flashy expensive automobiles (I do not believe they own ‘cars’)?

"From Bentleys and Mercedes to Ferraris and Astons, the football players own one or many of the most expensive cars in the world. A fast car is the ultimate accessory for almost all footballers," reports luxurylaunches.com.

Celebrity footballer, David ‘Spice Boy’ Beckham, leads the pack when it comes to stocking his garage with iconic models.

The England international, who was an icon at Manchester United and Real Madrid and is now cooling his heels in Major League Soccer side, LA Galaxy, changes his collection almost as often as pop star wife Victoria changes fashion gear.

Before his move to the Galaxy, Beckham had an automobile collection worth in excess of Sh150m.

Among these was a Lamborghini Gallardo worth $206,400 (Sh15.48m) and a $103,200 (Sh7.74m) Hummer H2 with additional extra lavish accessories costing $33,800 (Sh2.235m).

Beckham also kept ‘ordinary’ cars, including a Mercedes S500 he was famously pictured driving when Sir Alex Ferguson hit him with a boot in United’s dressing room.

He also owned a $312,080 (Sh23.406m) Bentley Arnage, in which he used to pick up his Order of the British Empire from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2003.

For those interested, the Arnage has been put up for sale according to an article published in yesterday’s UK newspaper, Daily Telegraph, after ‘having become surplus to requirements’.

The rest of his garage boasts a custom built Ferrari 360 Spyder costing around $215,550 (Sh16.166m), a Ferrari 550M, a Porsche 911, a Range Rover Vogue, an Aston Martin DB7 and a Lincoln Navigator.

A TVR Cerbera, Porsche 911 Turbo, a Land Rover 4.6 HSE, a Chrysler Grand Voyager, a Jaguar XKR and a bunch of armour plated BMWs (750i, 540i, X5) usually reserved for his minders and a Porsche Boxster complete the list.

Other players of ‘Jogo Bonito’ (beautiful games) with prized modes of conveyance include former team mate, Wayne Rooney who has a gathering that includes Cadillac Escalade (Sh6.7m), BMW X5, an Audi TT, BMW M3 (Sh6.7m) and the stand out Sh22.7m Austin Martin Vanquish S.

His wife, Coleen McLoughlin drives around in either a Mercedes SLK (Sh4.02m), a Porsche 911 (Sh8.04m) or Range Rover Vogue Sport bought to her by Rooney for her 19th and 22nd birthdays.

Outside the English Premier League, Barcelona striker, Thierry Henry drives around in a £313,000 (Sh41.94m) Mercedes SLR McLaren, an Aston Martin Vanquish S, Porsche Carrera GT and a Lincoln Navigator luxury 4X4 to bring the total worth of his cars to £870,000 (Sh116.58m).
