The escalating cost of fuel has increased the fares in the country. This has increased the cost of both consumable and non-consumable goods. But the effects of skyrocketing fuel prices are affecting social lives.

Some young men now complain that the high cost of living is threatening their marriages. Some men get stressed, causing the inability to perform their conjugal rights well.

According to a youthful businessman in Homa Bay town Maurice Otip, there is a dire need for the government to intervene and correct anomalies which led to the escalating cost of living. Otip argues that many marriages are going to break if the corrective measures are not put in place.

Speaking to The Nairobian in Homa Bay town, Otip argued that the high cost of living causes stress and fatigue which can deter a man from performing his conjugal rights effectively.

He said many young people are in situations where they wake up and spend a lot of energy in earning a living. However, they end up getting money which cannot hardly enable them to meet their family needs.

Otip noted that young men in marriages are suffering since they are perceived as the head of their families. “Men are perceived as the head of a family or household. They struggle to make ends meet but the high cost of living makes them unable to succeed,” Otip said. He argued that in case one fails to succeed in earning a living in a given duration, he easily ends up psychologically tortured.

This can impede a man’s ability to perform his conjugal rights.

“We are in a bad situation where men struggle to earn a living but they don’t get what they need due to the difficult economic situation in our country. This affects the capability of a man to perform conjugal rights. The situation culminates in unstable and broken marriages,” Otip said.

He said the high cost of living also causes gender-based violence in families, adding that men who cannot tolerate the financial demands of their wives end up being violent.

“If a man realises that his wife is demanding what he cannot afford, he will definitely slap her. This will lead to many cases of separation and divorce in families,” Otip said.

He called on the government to create job opportunities for the youth.

The high cost of living is also attributed to the inability of young men to marry according to Polycarp Otieno, a youthful businessman. [James Omoro]
