Four suspects who allegedly robbed a foreign couple of Sh14 million in a fake gold deal have been arrested by sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The suspects are accused of luring the couple, an Australian man and his Ugandan wife, from Uganda to Nairobi on October 28, promising them a lucrative gold business deal.

According to detectives, the suspects posed as businessmen and gold sellers and arranged to meet the couple at Village Market in Gigiri, Nairobi.

However, instead of delivering the gold, the suspects took the couple to an office building in Runda, where they were ambushed by more than ten men who assaulted them, attempted to rape the woman, and handcuffed them.

The suspects then fled with $60,000 (about Sh9 million) in cash and jewelry worth $30,000 (about Sh4.5 million) that belonged to the couple.

The DCI said that three of the suspects were arrested on Thursday, November 2, at the Social House Hotel in Lavington, while the fourth one was nabbed at the office building in Runda, where the incident took place.

Detectives recovered money counting machines, metallic boxes, forged certificates of mines, customs reflector jackets, military boots, KRA certificates, stamps, a Kenyan flag, and fake golden metal bars at the Runda office.

The suspects will be arraigned in court as they pursue other accomplices who are still at large.

The DCI also warned members of the public to be wary of fraudsters who lure unsuspecting victims into fake gold deals.

“Members of the public are advised to be cautious when engaging in any business transactions with strangers and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” DCI said.
