A middle-aged man has appeared in court following allegations of threatening to kill his wife and throwing her off the balcony at their home in Umoja 3 Estate, Njiru Sub-County.
According to court documents, the man, Joseph Omwenga is accused of inflicting severe injuries on his wife ESM by breaking her right leg during an incident that reportedly took place on the night of November 16.
Consequently, Omwenga was charged with assault and issuing death threats to his wife E.S.M. (Complainant) on May 3, while still at their home.
A recent incident of him breaking his wife’s door brought to light earlier instances of assault and death threats against her, cases that had long been swept under the rug.
That fateful night, everything seemed fine. The domestic workers had retired to their beds including the children leaving the couple conversing in the living room, court documents read.
Distress cries
However, about 30 minutes later, around 2am, the domestic staff reportedly became alarmed when they heard distress cries from the complainant. When the workers rushed upstairs, they found the accused allegedly punching and kicking her. The complainant was begging her spouse to spare her, asking for forgiveness. The accused was allegedly threatening to throw her through the balcony.
When the workers tried to calm him down, the accused chased the workers downstairs, also allegedly threatening them. It was then he also allegedly slapped her daughter who was inconsolably crying.
She was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that her injuries were serious. The authorities were quickly notified, and the husband taken into custody for questioning before being formally arraigned in court.
He has denied claims before Makadara Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bidali who granted him a bond of Sh100,000 pending mention on January 8.
