Local newspaper Daily Nation caused a stir on Wednesday morning after they published a death announcement on their obituary section of one James Richard Wanjagi.
The picture that was used in the advertisement to be that of James Richard Wanjagi is actually that of city businessman Jimi Wanjigi, a lead backer of NASA coalition.
The details of the death and funeral announcement show that it was indeed a prank on the popular mogul.
The name, James Richard Wanjagi is a variation of Jimi Richard Wanjigi. The ad goes ahead to say that Wanjaga died in a failed robbery attempt at his Karen home. Not so long ago, there was such an attempt at James Maina Wanjigi’s Karen home. James Maina is the father of Jimi Wanjigi.
There is also resemblance in the name of spouses as Jimi Wanjigi’s wife is called Irene and so was the name used in the ad as that of the widow. There is also the mention of Le Rosey Switzerland where Jimi Wanjigi’s children school.
The orbit also states that special thanks be sent to Kwacha Industries where Wanjagi called home for 25 years. Interestingly, Wanjigi's flagship family concern is called Kwacha Group of Companies.
Following the trend and rebuff following the infamous publication, Nation Media Group has responded to the erroneous publication and publicly apologised to the family of Mr Wanjigi.
“Nation Media Group does not condone such publication, which clearly goes against our editorial policy. We have taken immediate action against those responsible for the placement of the announcement, including reporting the matter to the police for further investigations” The response reads in part.
Mr Jimi Wanjigi is yet to respond to the matter.
