Bernard Otieno

A man has been charged in court for attempting to obtain money by false pretence. Bernard Otieno reportedly claimed to be a representative and colleague of popular Luo musician Emma Jalamo in November 2014 at Jimlizer Hotel in Buruburu. The accused claimed to be in a position to organise a concert featuring the famous musician.

The hotel manager, George Abiero, according to the prosecution, paid Otieno a deposit of Sh60,000, with the balance of Sh40,000 to be paid after the performance. Later, the court heard, the accused called the manager asking for an additional Sh10,000, claiming that Jalamo wanted to sort out some personal matter as he prepares for the big day. Abiero reportedly agreed to the request and made the additional payment.

However, Jalamo denied ever receiving the money or having contracted anyone as an agent to solicit business on his behalf. Otieno, who is said to have been on the run, was arrested on August 23 this year. He pleaded with the court claiming he is jobless, sick and that his wife left him.

The case will be mentioned on September 15.
