Police in Bungoma have impounded nine sacks of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh9 million in Watoya Village, Bumula Constituency.
According to the area Sub County Police Commander, Agrey Makomere, the contraband was discovered on Monday at around 10pm by community policing mobilizers, who spotted a suspicious Probox vehicle hidden among trees. They alerted the village administrator, who then informed the police.
“A group of unknown men was seen offloading the sacks from the vehicle. Unfortunately, they fled the scene upon realizing they had been spotted, leaving the bhang behind. They are still at large,” said Makomere.
He added that based on the packaging, authorities suspect the bhang was smuggled from Uganda and intended for distribution elsewhere.
The OCPD condemned the use of bhang, emphasizing its role in fueling criminal behavior among the youth.
“Bhang abuse has severely affected our communities, leading many young people to engage in crimes like petty theft just to sustain the habit. We must remain alert and guide our youth toward staying away from drugs,” he said.
Makomere confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits.
“We have established roadblocks at key points and intensified patrols as part of our investigation efforts. Our goal is to ensure those involved are brought to justice,” he added.
