NYERI:The Kenya Revenue Authority has defended itself against accusations that its online tax returns portal was slow and erratic.

KRA said the hiccups in its intranet portal was mainly a fault of unreliable internet service by their hosts and not a failure of its iTax system.

Many taxpayers in Nyeri have expressed concerns that it was complicated getting services from the portal because it loaded slowly, and constantly forced one to repeat the process severally.

Launching the Nyeri iTax support Centre Wednesday, acting Deputy Commissioner in charge of rollouts Elizabeth Meyo said three other support centres had been established in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu counties.

“The National Support Centre at the Railways Club in Nairobi has been receiving 1,000 clients daily since it was established showing there was a huge demand for our online services,” said Ms Meyo.

She said the revenue agency was considering establishing more support centres at Garrissa, Embu, Thika where it already has regional offices.

“The agency is incurring very low overheads in establishing these centres within its regional offices since it only has to purchase furniture and hire staff,” said Meyo.

She said 70 new staff members have been hired to man the support centres nationally. Taxpayers could acquire electronic tax PINs, tax compliance certificates and tax assessments as well as file tax returns and register objections to assessments in the centres. “The main objective is to enhance service delivery,” said Meyo.
