Former Kenya Cup champions KCB registered their fourth consecutive win of the season after edging out Nakuru RFC 45-10 at Nakuru Athletic Club yesterday.
Nakuru opened the scores taking an early lead after a penalty conversion to give the hosts a 3-point lead before KCB responded through scrum half Samuel Asati who split the defense open before slotting it home to open the scores for the bankers.
Patrick Ouko, and Martin Owila followed suit grabbing a try each as clinical Darwin Mukidza converted to give the bankers a 21-10 lead at the breather.
In the second half, Michael Kimwele's double, Elvis Olukusi and super sub Brian Wahinya's tries were enough for the bankers to seal the win and stamp its place on the top of the log.
"Nakuru is a strong side. We had underestimated them but they proved to be quick and smart, making us give away early points but I'm proud of the boys' fighting spirit, we managed to grab the win we came for," said the Kenya Simbas full back.
In Kakamega, defending champions Kabras Sugar failed to pick a bonus point win despite seeing off a resilient Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) side 21-0.
Kenyan international Brian Tanga scored a brace of tries in the first half that Ntabeni Dukisa converted before Shem Anguyo added a third try to lead 21-0 at the break.
MMUST came from the break a more changed side as they defended for 40 minutes to deny the sugar men a bonus point try.
In the Kenya Cup, if a team scores more than four tries they earn an extra bonus point added to the four points collected in a win.
In Nairobi, Menengai Oilers maintained their unbeaten run after beating Homeboyz 37-22 at Jamhuri Grounds.
Kenya Simbas' player John Okoth gave Oilers a 7-0 lead before Mohamed Omollo and Amon Wamlwa scored a try and penalty to give Homeboyz a 8-7 lead.
Okoth returned to the scores sheet as Oilers retook the lead 14-8 at the breather. In the final half, Hillary Malweyi and Steve Arunga added to the Oilers tries as they led 26-8 before Michael Nyakundi scored Homeboyz's second try for a 26-15 score line.
Okoth completed his hat-trick as Tom Maina added to the deejays' 37-22 defeat.
