National women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, head coach Paul Bitok has cautioned his players against complacency ahead of tonight’s (7 pm) African Games semi-final against Nigeria in Rabat, Morocco.

The record African champions face another test of character in their title defense bid as they clash with Group A runners up jostling for a place in Friday’s final.

Malkia Strikers have so far had an impressive run in the tournament, overcoming their newfound rivals Cameroon 3-1 and Senegal 3-0 to finish top of Group B.

Cameron battle hosts and Group A winners Morocco in a late kick-off semifinal at 9 pm.
Though Malkia Strikers get into the match as favourites, the former Rwanda coach wants his charges to stick to their strategy and remain focused.

“I am happy with the performance of the team so far. However, those group stage wins are now behind us, our next match matters most. As we head into the semifinals, I would like to encourage my team to stay focused throughout and avoid complacency,” said Bitok.

“Nigeria are no pushovers, they are tough opponents. Therefore, we must keep working hard and smart while following the technical bench game plan and strategy.”

And with Kenya and Cameroon having qualified for the last four, the former national men’s team captain believes the two giants are likely to set up a repeat of the 2015 final in Congo Brazzaville where Malkia Strikers ‘B’ emerged victorious.

“Chances are high we might have a repeat final with Cameroon but there is no room to relax against Nigeria,” said Bitok.

Having watched some of the Nigerians’ group matches, assistant captain Noel Murambi is equally prepared for a difficult tie tonight.

But with a ‘relaxed’ mood in the camp, the experienced KCB left attacker is optimistic of sailing through to the final.

Just after securing their semis ticket with a straight sets win over Senegal on Monday, there was shared a video online of the Malkia Strikers players singing and dancing.

“Of course we are the favourites, but that doesn’t mean we can underrate Nigeria. They also came here to compete and are in the semis by merit,” said Murambi.

“The mood and the morale in the camp is great. We are all determined not only to reach the final, but accomplish our mission which is to defend the title. We are ready to meet any team in the final.”

Flamboyant setter Jane Wacu added: “All teams are strong but we are hoping to reach the final. We don’t have a preferred opponent in the final, but as you all know Cameroon are stronger.”
