Government releases Sh16.7b to cushion vulnerable households

The government has released Sh16.7 billion for the Inua Jamii Programme meant to cushion vulnerable households.

The project, a Cash Transfer programme caters to over one million beneficiaries from poor and vulnerable households across the country,

Each beneficiary is set to receive a Sh16,000 bi-monthly stipend, which the government says will be disbursed in two tranches in June and July 2023.

The payments will be for four cycles namely; November to December 2022, January to February of this year, March to April, and May to June 2023.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, while announcing the disbursement on Wednesday, June 22 said the cash transfer programme is in line with Kenya Kwanza's manifesto of supporting Kenyans who form the lower cadre of the economy.

"We remain committed to supporting the most vulnerable members of the society who deserve to live a dignified life," said Gachagua.

The payments will be rolled out from June 28.

Inua Jamii is comprised of three programmes that transfer cash to orphans and vulnerable children, older persons, and those with severe disabilities.

Five of the Arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) counties namely Kitui, Kilifi, Marsabit, Turakana, and West Pokot form the main beneficiaries of the project.
