US female rapper and influencer Dank Demoss is suing cab-hailing company Lyft after an altercation with a cab driver who refused to pick her up due to her size.
The 36-year-old Plus Size musician and influencer, whose video has gone viral, tried to enter the vehicle but was denied by the driver who identified himself as Abraham. The driver claimed that her weight could damage his car's tyres, leading to the refusal.
The Detroit-based rapper had requested a ride to attend a Detroit Lions watch party, but upon her ride's arrival, the driver then told Demoss that she was "too big" to fit in his car and suggested she order a larger vehicle
Despite the driver saying he would refund the rapper on her ride, she sued the ride-hailing service claiming she was discriminated against.
"I can fit in this car," the rapper, who also goes by Dajua Blanding, could be heard saying in a video she posted on social media.
Demoss, who weighs approximately 221.8 kg is said to be left humiliated prompting her to seek legal redress.
Her attorney, Jonathan Marko, emphasized that refusing transportation due to weight is akin to discrimination based on race or religion, both of which are protected characteristics under Michigan law. The lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress, humiliation, and other grievances.
Lyft has issued a statement condemning all forms of discrimination, stating that their community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination.
