A student at Sigalagala National Polytechnic has been charged with stealing seven loaves of bread and five kilograms of sugar from the institution’s kitchen.
Francis Juma Barasa was charged with breaking into the building of the institution based in Khayega, Kakamega East Sub-County, and committing felony there in and stealing the items valued Sh900.
On an alternative count, Juma was charged with handling stolen property, the particulars being that, other than in the course of stealing, he was found with the loaves and the sugar while having a reason to believe they were stolen property.
The accused is alleged to have gained entry into the building using a master key during the 5am attack.
Cooks at the institution noticed that sugar was missing when they were preparing tea for the students.
Upon a careful look, they further discovered that seven loaves were also missing.
After a successful search, the items were recovered from Juma’s cubicle which led to his arrest.
However, Juma who looked unmoved with the gravity of the offences he was facing denied the charges before Kakamega Resident Magistrate William Lopokoiyit.
The Magistrate granted him Sh5,000 cash bail to enable him face trial while attending his studies.
The matter will be mentioned on October 17 and heard on January 23, 2019.
