A ‘rich’ beggar is at his wits end in the United Arab Emirates after he was arrested in a swoop in Dubai, with Sh2.7 million (Dh100,000).
According to Khaleej Times, the beggar of Asian origin was arrested by police on patrol on the first day of Eid Al Fitr and upon being searched, the cops found Sh1.2 million hidden in his artificial limb.
They frisked him further and recovered an additional Sh1.5 million (Dh55, 000) in his possession. Some of the cash were in foreign currency.
The assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri told the media outlet that the man was amongst 243 beggars rounded up by the police.
The man had allegedly visited the country on a visit visa during the holy month of Ramadan and the police are after the company that issued him with the visa for legal action.
Mansouri said that beggars in Dubai have devised tricks on how to gain sympathy of residents and some were resorting to crime.
He pointed out that of the 243 beggars rounded up by police, 107 were women. 195 came on visit visas.
The anti-begging campaign is carried out by the Dubai Police annually.
