A man believed to be behind a scam that has been targeting members of parliament has been exposed as Wazir Benson Masubo Chacha, a former Ministry of Devolution employee.
According to the police, Chacha has allegedly been using personal details of the legislators to extort money through M-Pesa with the latest victim being Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.
Chege’s emotional narration on the floor of the House last week on how her personal details were being used by the alleged con caught the nation’s attention especially her assertions that he was being protected despite his details being out there.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti said Chacha has been linked to four other cases of fraud and that the police have in the last week been trying to get him but in vain.
“He used an ID number of a former MP to register an MPesa account in the name of Sabina Wanjiku Chege. He did this in Donholm and we have all the details,” said Kinoti.
On February 9, 2018, the Nairobian carried a full expose where he played victim claiming that he had been used and dumped by former Bomet Women Representative Dr Cecilia Ng’etich.
Chacha claimed that he met Ng’etich while he was working at the Ministry of Devolution when she came to drop tender documents and their relationship blossomed only for her to dump him on Valentine’s Day. A day he claims he was to accompany her to South Africa.
In response, perhaps the first red flag in the whole saga, Ngetich claimed that Chacha was a man of questionable character who should be investigated for operating in the country using illegal documents.
She disclosed that Chacha's dodgy details are captured in his identification documents including his identity card.
“He is using Waziri Chacha but his ID reads Benson Waziri Masubo. He is not Kenyan and does not live in Runda, but Buruburu with relatives,” she said.
According to documents in the possession of the the Nairobian some of his listed properties include a Toyota Land Cruiser V8, Toyota Lexus and Chrysler 1540.
