Five suspects are in custody after police intercepted a carton of explosives disguised as milk on a Meru-bound bus.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with a carton of explosives discovered on a Meru-bound bus during a routine patrol by a multi-agency security team along the Kanyonyoo-Embu highway.
According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the package had been falsely declared as "Dawa ya Maji" at the Tahmeed office in Kakamega by Brenda Makhulungu.
"Acting on forensic leads, detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) and Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) zeroed in on the key suspect, Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu, apprehending her in Mundutsu village, Kakamega County," the post read in part.
The carton, which bore the logo of a popular local milk brand, concealed ten water gel explosives labelled EXPLOGEL V6, a detonating cord, and two electric detonators, the DCI revealed.
"The bus was swiftly escorted to Kanyonyo Police Station, where the driver, Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, and the conductor, Said Rashid Amour, were taken into custody," the post continued.
Investigators believe the explosives originated in Kakamega, were transported to Mombasa, and were later rerouted to the Meru-bound bus through Kitui.
The probe later led detectives to Meru town, where two additional suspects-David Tindi Andala and John Kariuki Kung'u-were arrested.
DCI confirmed that all five suspects are currently in custody, and both the bus and the explosive materials have been detained as exhibits.
