A community in the Democratic Republic of Congo shape the heads of their babies after birth in a unique way.

The Mangbetu people are well known for their art and music which is considered highly developed.

The shape of their heads grabbed the attention of the Europeans before the 1950’s but faded once more Europeans and westerners started coming in.

According to the Mangbetu tradition, babies’ heads were tightly wrapped with a cloth to give them a unique appearance. The act was called ‘Lipombo’. Early in the 18th century, the Mangbetu came into contact with Bantu -speaking tribes and intermarried.
