SGR is a national project, not Jubilee

As the country celebrates the launch of part of the Standard Gauge Railway, it cannot escape the eye to observe that the project has been heavily promoted as a Jubilee success. However, the country is sharply divided along political lines, between Jubilee and NASA.

It is understandable that Jubilee would like to flag every achievement that can be shown as part of their campaign strategy for re-election. However, the SGR presents a double edged sword.

 Principally, it is funded through loans that all tax-payers will ultimately bear the burden of repaying. When the rubber meets the road, it will not matter whether one is a Jubilee supporter or a NASA supporter.

Some NASA supporters criticise the project is because it is being used as a campaign vehicle for Jubilee party, of which they do not support. It has less to do with its viability. However, everyone is concerned about the exorbitant cost the project has accrued.

Therefore, it is prudent for the government to help Kenyans to appreciate the project as a national project where both Uhuru and Raila have played a positive role in upbringing. Nashon Tado, Nairobi
