Is the phone taking the place of God in church? Be my specimen. Do you enter your place of worship with your mobile phone on? If yes, why? The answer is simple; the mobile is everything these days. It's the dictionary in case your religious leader uses vocabularies. It's the Bible. Always read with the leader. Probably to confirm whether he/she is saying the truth or for reasons known to you. It's the clock. The mobile phone is a mirror for correcting the hair, reflecting the shining rays of your snow white teeth, for checking the face etc. Soon it is likely to have toothpick and probably a nail cutter, a lip stick and a comb.
The goodies of mobile phones are not limited to only the above.
However, my worry is the way phones are arresting the attention of the congregants to an extent of losing the purpose coming to the place of worship.
It all started with sms chats. Up to date, this is a popular engagement of many especially the youths in modern church.
To their advantage, a single sms today cost as little as 10 cents when bought as bulk. It's not surprising that the chats engage youths in different churches and those not in attendances of any. Chats are good if without negative criticism of the church and other things in it, or mushenising some people. However, it's not appropriate for places of worship.
Later, Facebook followed closely. It took the young generation by storm and swept them through. Facebook chatting replaced sms to some people; the problem with Facebook is that it has a long wait before a reply. Initially, there was no means of immediate notification expect for regular refreshing of the website. All concentration was put on the wait for reply.
WhatsApp has now killed it all. It's immediate and the most appropriate means ever developed. Modern mobile phones have a silent mode. This is better off the ring and vibration. However, it keeps the person over concentrated on the phone than what is going on in the church.

The worst of the evils is when a phone rings and it's takes a minute for the owner to locate where it is. The whole congregation is put in a tempting condemnation mood. And it happens when it's either prayers or a sermon going on. As if not enough, students and the youths have the advantage of reading funny websites and googling assignments.
Mobile phones should be switched off when someone is in church. Any communication you get on the phone especially messages disrupts your concentration. Some WhatsApp and Facebook posts are very funny and humorous. That is why you will hear someone laugh alone so loudly such that everyone turns to see what's happening. When you turn, he either looks down or runs away.
Secondly, mobile phones are sources of disturbing news at times. In a place of worship, you need some peace of the heart. Don't leave a loop hole for: ‘in case I am called’.
Thirdly, mobile phones bring unnecessary hurry and ghostly tiredness. When a person starts calling and the service is about to end, you get disturbed and the service starts to seem longer than it really is.
To cut things short; carry the Bible, switch off your phone while in church and if you can't, put it on flight mode.
