Kenya: There is need for leaders to stop politicising matters pertaining to the management of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town if development projects initiated at the facility are anything to go by.

For instance, the Sh1 billion cancer centre at the hospital, which has been completed, will go a long way in the provision of crucial healthcare for not only residents in North Rift but also the country at large.

The hospital’s CEO, Dr John Kibosia, must be commended for tremendous developments at the facility since he took over.

It is encouraging that the CEO has brought a lot of changes, including efficiency and discipline among the workers in handling patients.

Incompetent and lazy officers have no room in the modern MTRH.

The cancer centre that was also built under Kibosia’s watch will be able to provide better treatment than in the past.

Chemotherapy and radiology will be provided at the facility, and residents in the region will be relieved of the transport costs in seeking the services in Nairobi.

It is also impressing that a 100-bed Shoe4Africa Foundation Children Hospital has been completed. This will be the largest children’s hospital in East and Central Africa and has cost more than Sh1 billion.

During Kibosia’s tenure, the hospital has also expanded its eye unit with modern equipment at a cost of more than Sh20 million, with the unit treating more than 800 eye patients a month.

The hospital is now able to handle micro- and macro-eye surgeries.

It is also encouraging that the hospital will focus on training more personnel to improve services in all departments.

Leaders should stop politicising matters pertaining to the management of the facility and let professionals carry out their duties.
