Family mourns kin killed in elephant raid

Kwale, Kenya: A family in Kipambani sub-location, Kwale County, is grieving after elephants killed their kin.

The deceased, Muthama Mavengo, was going home at around 8pm on Monday evening from work at Kipambani market where he owns a posho mill when he was attacked.

Amos Maundu, a resident, told the Press there were four elephants. “His family kept calling him on his mobile phone after he failed to return from work,” he said.

Maundu said they stumbled on Mavengo’s shoes before finding his body beside a well.

“We are now living in fear of more attacks by the animals, which have been roaming freely on our farms without intervention by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials,” he said.

County KWS Community Affairs Officer Dadley Tsiganyiu condoled with the bereaved family and asked them to remain calm as the Government starts addressing human-wildlife conflicts.
