So, Victor Wanyama is Celtic’s Young Player of the Year, an award he won because of prowess in the pitch? Congratulations are in order for the young Wanyama, who is flying the Kenyan flag higher. Indeed, the sky is the limit for him.
Soon he may join Manchester City, Manchester United or even Barcelona — the big boys of football, and earn money our MPs can only dream of. For Wanyama, joining the big boys is certain. It is just a matter of time. But as his career soars, Wanyama, who has now been dubbed a natural winner, is barely recognised here by those who matter.
He does not have an EBS or OBS before his name like other heroes who have been decorated for their immense contribution in various development aspects. The sooner Wanyama gets that EBS or EGH prefix from State House, the better for the sportsmen of this country. And as we wait for President Uhuru to decorate him, the player should up his game in Harambee Stars.
It does not make sense that he should go on winning league after league for Celtic FC, yet he has not helped Stars win any major trophy. He can conquer the world, but if he fails to reinvent himself locally and help stars gain continental glory, he may end up like many of his predecessors. Kenyans are very unforgiving.
