Deputy President Kithure Kindiki arrived in Dodoma, Tanzania, on Monday to witness the swearing-in of President-elect Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, following a highly controversial election.

Kindiki was received at the Dodoma State House, where he joined other regional leaders attending the ceremony.

His visit comes amid widespread scrutiny over the credibility of Tanzania’s polls, in which Suluhu was declared the winner with 98 percent of the vote.

Earlier, President William Ruto congratulated President Suluhu on her re-election, calling for peace and dialogue amid post-election unrest.

“I extend sincere congratulations to Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election in the General Election held on October 29, 2025,” Ruto said in a statement.

“Kenya stands in solidarity with Tanzania and looks forward to strengthening bilateral ties and regional cooperation.”

Other leaders present at the event included Somalia’s President Sheikh Mahmoud, Burundi’s Évariste Ndayishimiye, and former Eswatini Acting Prime Minister Themba Masuku, among others.

Kindiki's visit is anticipated to attract scrutiny from Kenyans and the international community.

But Suluhu’s swearing-in came at a time when the international community continues to question the transparency of Tanzania’s electoral process, following reports of chaos in several parts of the country.

Over the weekend, violent protests rocked major cities, with reports of deaths, injuries, and widespread property destruction.

Journalists in Dar es Salaam told The Standard that groups of young demonstrators carried out sporadic attacks on government installations and property belonging to individuals perceived to be loyal to the President.

Security forces reportedly responded with force, leading to clashes that left several casualties.

Credible sources said morgues in parts of the country were overwhelmed by victims allegedly killed during the skirmishes.
