Nairobi, Kenya: Six people among them an administration policewoman were Wednesday arraigned before a Nairobi court for being in possession of handcuffs and a toy gun which were allegedly meant to be used in committing a felony.

Christopher Nganga, Gabriel Ochieng’, Moses Muya, Geoffrey Isalano, Ihab Salim and Loise Kiragu were arrested on April 28 at Nairobi’s Ruaraka area.

The prosecutor informed Resident Magistrate P M Mugure that the accused, while on board a Toyota NZE of registration number KBR 058J, had with them a pair of police handcuffs and a toy gun which were allegedly meant for use in the course of robbery.

The six were further accused that on the said date they had in their possession a pair of police handcuffs, the property of Kenya Police Service suspected of having been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor asked the court not to release the accused on bond in order to give police time to complete investigations.

She asked the court to remand the accused at Muthaiga Police Station for three days.

However, the accused, some with physical injuries and bloodstains on their clothes, alleged they were tortured by officers when they were arrested on Monday afternoon.

Defence lawyer Cliff Ombeta alleged that his client had been severely beaten by police and that she should be taken to hospital.
