The Universities and Colleges Football League (UCFL) Super Cup champions, Nairobi Aviation, impressed as the league kicked off at the weekend with a resounding 4-0 rout of National Youth Service (NYS) Engineers at Kabete Technical Institute grounds.

Aviation, who won the UCFL title in 2012, made their intentions to wrestle the league title from champions Zetech University this season known in their opening encounter that saw John Oniala, Caleb Olilo, Peter Otiri and James Mandela net their four goals to back three points.

In another encounter, Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) thrashed hosts Kabete Technical Institute 3-0. Sylvester Karanja opened the scores after 17 minutes of play before Oliver Ochieng’ made it 2-0 five minutes later and then added his second in the 54th minute to enable his side to walk home with maximum points.

Premier Institute edged Nairobi Institute of Business Studies Nairobi Campus 1-0 thanks to Teddy Omondi’s strike in the 88th minute.

THREE TEAMS

Speaking to FeverPitch on Sunday, UCFL Secretary General Maurice Ochieng’ said three teams would not continue to take part in the league due to technical issues.

“We have maintained an 18-team league because of easy management. Mount Kenya University (MKU), Riara University and Karen Technical Institute for the Deaf will not take part in this season’s league. MKU and Riara are taking part in more than one league, while Karen are yet to confirm their participation. University of Nairobi Kabete Campus, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and Railways Training Institute have joined the league,” said Ochieng’.

“We have 10 women’s teams that have confirmed participation in the league that will be played in a tournament format.”

Meanwhile, Technical University of Kenya (TUK) inched closer to clinching the Kenya University Sports Association Nairobi conference league after earning four points at Strathmore University grounds.

TUK defeated UMMA University 1-0 thanks to Shadrack Ochoi’s seventh minute strike before forcing a two-all draw against MKU.
