NAKURU: Former President Daniel arap Moi has challenged the government and stakeholders to ensure children access the best possible education for a better future.
Speaking during Moi Primary School Kabarak’s fifth prize and thanksgiving ceremony yesterday, Moi underscored the need for a strong educational foundation.
“When I was establishing this primary school, many people asked themselves why was I building such a magnificent institution for primary pupils. My heart loves children and they are part and parcel of this country,” he said.
The former head of state said parents and teachers have a big role to play and should not take the lives of young children casually.
Moi, who founded Kabarak in 1991, said there is need to ensure more primary schools are established in rural areas to serve children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

STERLING PERFORMANCE
He challenged MPs to prioritise establishment of quality learning infrastructure, including early childhood development centres, in their constituencies.
He stressed the need to secure the future of children across the country and appreciated efforts played by both levels of government but said more needs to be done.
While congratulating both Moi High School Kabarak and Moi Primary School Kabarak for their sterling performance in last year’s national examinations, the former President asked teachers to ensure children are taken care of within school facilities.
“I promise to do everything possible to ensure children admitted in Kabarak are well taken care of. Parents should also work extra hard and have the foundation of their children well established,” said Moi.
Moi, who is the school’s patron, said the institution is constructing two dormitories that would accommodate more than 200 pupils after completion.
He was accompanied at the ceremony by Moi Primary School Kabarak headmaster Joseph Odhiambo, Kabarak University Vice Chancellor Prof Jones Kaleli and Deputy Vice chancellor Henry Kiplagat among other dignitaries.
Last year, the primary school registered an excellent performance in KCPE, with the top candidate, Gabriel Wanjau, scoring 435 marks.
Being the best performer, Wanjau led the 108 candidates in breaking the school’s record by posting a mean score of 385.32, up from 379 in 2014.
