Planning and National Development Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth has called on Kenyans to elect leaders with admirable development records and who have the country’s interest at heart.

He said Kenyans should elect development conscious leaders who will continue with the development pace set by President Kibaki. Speaking at Kiaguthu Boys High School in Murang’a County, Kenneth, who is also the Gatanga MP, said that leaders must be ready to undergo public vetting.

"Kenyans should be cautious so that when the time comes, they elect right candidates to ensure the development programmes initiated by Kibaki do not come to a halt with his exit," he said.

Other MPs present, including Muturi Mwangi (Kiharu), Elias Mbau (Maragua) and Clement Wambugu (Mathioya) supported Kenneth’s sentiments, where they urged Kenyans to make the right choice of leadership during next year’s elections.

Mbau, a key supporter of Kenneth, expressed confidence that Kenyans will get rid of tainted leaders and replace them with development conscious representatives.

On police reforms, Kenneth called for a halt to the ongoing vetting of senior police officers, and instead suggested that an independent body undertake the process, in a similar manner to the ongoing vetting of judicial officers by the Judicial Service Commission.

The leaders said Kenyans should not allow the police to vet themselves, noting that errant security officers will use uncouth ways to ensure they are retained.
