More than 3,000 people in Kisii County have been displaced by the heavy rains that have been pounded the area for the last one month.
A total of 195 households in Chitago Borabu Ward in South Mugirango Constituency have borne the brunt of the heavy rains. Another 116 suffered the same fate in Sensi Ward in Kitutu Chache North Constituency following a landslide.
Kisii County Executive Committee Member in charge of Administration Walter Okibo said the county government, in collaboration with the National Government and Kenya Red Cross Society, has evacuated the affected families to safer grounds.
“The affected families are now camping in schools, those in Chitago Borabu Ward are at Nyasasa and Nyandiera primary schools while those in Nyabworoba Sub-Location of Sensi Ward are currently at Nyabworoba primary and secondary schools,” said Okibo.
Okigbo said women and children are the most affected.
Relief aid
CEC said the County Government, in partnership with the Red Cross, has taken relief aid to some families in Chitago Borabu while those remaining are expected to be assisted by tomorrow.
He appealed to the affected people in Sensi Ward not to return to their homes despite the rains going down, until a permanent solution is found.
As part of the county’s Christmas celebrations, Governor James Ongwae will share food and non-food stuff to the less fortunate, including those affected by the landslide and the floods.
