The inclusion of Kenyans from all communities and backgrounds in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) symbolises the country’s unity, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.

He said KDF has proved to be an institution whose essence is the foundation of diversity inspired by integrity and professionalism.

“It is sustained by patriotism and selflessness.  As I have said on other occasions, our Defence Forces represent our national values in action,” President Kenyatta said.

The President spoke Friday at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret where he presided over this year’s recruits passing-out parade.

Commending the Kenya Defence Forces for their selfless service to the nation, President Kenyatta said Kenyans appreciate that the forces are often called to serve in the most dangerous conditions and even pay the ultimate price for the sake of the country.

“I want to emphasise here today that we do not take this for granted,” President Kenyatta said.

He also praised the KDF for their professional conduct throughout Operation Linda Nchi and the Somalia Operation, saying their exemplary conduct in service under the African Union has effectively supported the civil authority.

The Head of State urged the new service men and women to uphold the high standards required by the service in order to enjoy a meaningful youth full of personal achievement and contribution to the national well-being.

He said the Kenya Defence Forces are a highly esteemed international brand, enjoying decades-long reputation in peace-keeping throughout the world.

“Do not waver in pursuit of excellence.  Do not stint in your march to success.  Do not flinch in any encounter with personal or professional challenge.  Do not tire in serving your country.  We are with you in thought, support and prayer,” he said.

Noting the increase in the number of female recruits year after year, the President said the substantial female component testifies to the nation’s commitment to equality and equal opportunity regardless of gender.

He said he was proud that even in the disciplined forces, the country is on the forward march to realising the promise of the Constitution and the people’s aspirations.

Apart from integrity and discipline, President Kenyatta called on the new service men and women to be loyal to their country and Government.

“This nation takes justifiable pride in the high standard that our Defence Forces have set and maintained for decades.  We are proud, not only of your achievements, but also of the assurance that no matter what, you cannot, will not and shall not fail Kenya ever,” President Kenyatta said.

He expressed satisfaction that the African Union and the United Nations Security Council have continued to show solid confidence in the capability, professionalism and integrity of the KDF.
