KIAMBU, KENYA: A DC was found dead in a school compound in Githunguri District in Kiambu.

James Hungi Mugwe, who was stationed at Lower Yatta in Kitui County, was allegedly butchered by a gang at around 3am on Sunday in an incident that occurred at St Joseph High School.

Police said Hungi had gone to visit a friend who lives in the school and was on his way back when the gang, which had raided the school, accosted him.

Githunguri police boss Wilkister Vera said a ten-member gang armed with crude weapons had raided the school and got hold of four watchmen.

Two computers

Ms Vera said the gang had already broken into the principal’s office, where they made away with two computers belonging to the principal and his secretary, when they killed Hungi.

While they were ransacking other offices, they spotted Hungi at the gate as he was driving out of the compound.

According to Vera, Hungi told his friend that he had a special assignment on Sunday morning and that was why he wanted to travel that early.

“He had gone to visit a friend and he was leaving at that hour. At the gate he tried to hoot but the watchmen did not come so he got out of the car to check on them and that was when part of the gang, which was had kept vigil at the gate attacked him with machetes,” Vera said.

She said the DC succumbed to the injuries a few minutes later.

A fifth watchman who was patrolling in another section saw Hungi’s body and informed the school authority, who reported the matter to Githunguri Police Station. The body was taken to City Mortuary.

Vera said the woman Hungi had visited has already recorded a statement, adding that they have launched a hunt for the criminals who she said could be behind a series of computer thefts in learning institutions and government offices in the area.

Central Police chiefs led by PC Jasper Rugut and the Deputy PPO visited the scene later in the day.
