The only public cemetery in Naivasha is full forcing people to bury their kin in shallow graves to avoid interfering with older ones.
As a result, those living near the cemetery now fear there could be a disease outbreak since dogs have been digging up the corpses from the shallow graves.
Inhabitants of Kabati estate, which borders the cemetery, have complained of a heavy stench emanating from the area.
The cemetery got full months ago and the Municipal Council of Naivasha has been looking for alternative land to put up a new one.
The chairman of the finance committee, Simon Wanyoike, said the council had set aside Sh10 million to buy 24 acres of land in Suswa along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road for a cemetery.
“It’s true the current cemetery got filled up a long time ago and the council is looking for alternative land,” said the councillor.
He said Nema and the department of public health had approved the land but that they were still awaiting the consent of the Ministry of Local Government.
Meanwhile, residents of Karai in Naivasha are up in arms over a dumpsite in the area. They asked Nema to take action against the council over poor waste disposal.
Polythene papers are scattered all over and some of the waste is finding their way into their homes, they said.
