Prof Ayiro reappointed Daystar University VC

Daystar University has reappointed Prof Laban Ayiro as Vice Chancellor for a second five-year term.

Council’s chairman Prof George Njoroge made the communication in a letter dated March 8, 2024. Prof Njoroge expressed confidence in Ayiro, pegging the growth of the university to his leadership.

“It is with great pleasure that I write to congratulate you on the excellent outcome of your performance contract appraisal, as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of Daystar University," reads the letter.

He said that in the year 2019, Prof Ayiro assumed the leadership of a university with a myriad of challenges and set out to change the fortunes of the institution.

Using his networks, Prof Ayiro has been able to attract grants and scholarships for thousands of students at the institution.

“The university is blessed to have you at its leadership helm at this point. We have seen students’ exponential growth and transformation the University has experienced in the last five years of your leadership,” said Prof Njoroge.

The council boss hailed the VC for a sterling performance, driving the University to greater heights of growth through sound strategies.

“Your appointment as the vice chancellor is an answered prayer and it is our prayer that you will see this appointment as God's call to you to serve Him at Daystar University,” he said.

The university notes that for the last five years, there has been an upsurge of student numbers having moved from less than 4,000 to 8,000.

He reiterated that Prof Ayiro has been able to contain the regular students and staff strikes which was an eyesore at the university.

“Prof. Ayiro instituted a marshall plan, to attract students to the institution and get those who were stuck in the system to complete their studies.  This bore fruits and 1, 200 graduate students were able to complete their studies,” he said.

“Through his connections, he has built an imposing school of Nursing and established seven new graduate programmes in Educational leadership, law, nursing, and development studies,” he said. 

In addition, the university has made great strides and has transformed into being a research centre making it a preferred destination for students in different disciplines.

“Prof. Ayiro believes that graduate students often fail to complete their studies due to a lack of research skills and he personally teaches research methodology to graduate students at the University,” he stated.

He further said the university is investing heavily and breaking new grounds of growth which will define its future as a centre of research.

This, Prof Njoroge said,  makes significant contributions to research, training of human power, and community service.

The council also lauded Prof Ayiro for overseeing infrastructure improvement and academic programmes, which led to the establishment of the Open Distance E-learning (ODeL) that has attracted more graduate students.

Last year, Prof Ayiro was feted with the best VC award in the country at Uongozi Awards on November 24.
