Busia, Kenya: Ugenya MP David Ochieng escaped death narrowly when his vehicle rolled several times before landing in a ditch at Nangina Youth Polytechnic along the Bumala-Port Victoria Road.

The MP, together with three other occupants including the driver, suffered multiple injuries and had to be rushed to Nangina Holy Family Hospital for treatment.

According to Funyula MP Paul Otuoma, the accident occurred at around 10pm on Saturday when the MP, who had visited him at his home in Bunandi village, Samia sub-county, was returning to Ugenya.

Poor visibility

Otuoma said the MP’s driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to poor visibility and lack of familiarity with the road.

“There is a sharp bend at the point where the accident occurred and there is a possibility that the driver may not have noted the curve because of poor visibility,” said Otuoma.

He added: “The MP and two other people were treated for shock and cuts and allowed to go home.”

Residents said the spot was notorious for accidents and appealed to authorities to erect bumps. The vehicle was towed to Funyula Police Station.
