The race for the national men’s volleyball playoffs warmed up yesterday after defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) won their match to inch closer to the last four.

The matches at Nyayo National Stadium also saw former champions Prisons Kenya remain among the favourites to qualify for the playoffs.

No team has secured a guaranteed place in the last four.

However, the top three Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), GSU and Prisons are highly likely to book their places.

KPA who did not have any assignment yesterday and today need to beat Administration Police (AP) Kenya tomorrow to automatically book their place in the playoffs. GSU and Prisons Kenya need to at least win two of their three remaining matches to cement their places at the playoffs.

In yesterday’s match, GSU coached by Gideon Tarus needed only 57 minutes to silence Nairobi Prisons 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19).

Considering they needed to win the match to enhance their chances of making it to the last four, GSU produced excellent blocks and hits to overpower their opponents.

In the other match, Prisons under coach David Lung’aho easily dispatched Kenya Army 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-12).

Prisons who were to play AP Kenya later yesterday face Central Prisons today before clashing with GSU in a match expected to be a thriller on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Malkia Strikers continued with their training yesterday at Osasco volleyball club in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Head coach Paul Bitok said the players have settled well and embarked on vigorous training in preparation for the World Championships to be co-hosted by Netherlands and Poland between September 23 and October 15.

“The team is working hard to improve before traveling for the global championship,” said Bitok adding that they will play top notch build up matches against top teams in Brazil and Serbia.

The team will also play Colombia national team before heading to Europe.

Debutants Magdalene Mwende and Belinda Barasa said they were excited to be in Brazil.

“I am happy to be part of the team in Brazil and am looking forward to gain more exposure,” said Mwende.

Sharon Chepchumba and middle blocker Edith Wisa said they expect the team to improve.
