Cool down Ruto! Raila, Kenyans have a right to question possible Sh21B dam scandal | PERSPECTIVE

In February 16, there was media reports questioning why and how CMC di Ravenna, an Italian firm said to be bankrupt, was given the go-ahead to construct the Sh63-billion Aror and Kimwarer dams.

The DCI George Kinoti on February 26 released a list of prominent people and directors of 107 firms implicated in the scam, ordering them to present themselves at the DCI headquarters to record statements over the same.

Two days later, Deputy President William Ruto during a Judiciary forum, referred to the DCI reports of possible loss of Sh21 billion as "a flat lie", Saying that the money under investigation was about Sh7 billion and that no money would be lost since EPC+ F comes with a protected bank or insurance guarantee.

Ever since then, DP Ruto and his allies led by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi and others have come all guns blazing against the DCI, and any political leader who have tried to raise alarm over the dam scandal.

Murkomen at a Senate proceeding disputed the claims that money was lost, saying the allegations are a ploy to deny his county, Elgeyo Marakwet, the two projects and give them to another county.

According to Murkomen, DCI George Kinoti’s investigations are a political witch-hunt targeted at a specific community wondering why no one had questioned other dams in different counties on a similar financing model.
