Benter Akinyi: He poured acid on my face, He beat me up and asked why I was not dead
Benter Akinyi, a Nairobi resident has gone through brutality at the hands of men she trusted.
During an interview with Radio Maisha, she revealed how a man called Felix repeatedly defiled her when she was young.
Ms Akinyi recounted a particular incident in which Felix even poured acid on her face after she turned down his marriage proposal.
She further added that though Felix had helped her at her moment of need when she had lost both parents, he did offered the assistance with the secret intention of marrying her.
She explains that after sustaining second-degree burns from the acid attack that happened one term before her KCSE exam she was undeterred and finished her high school education.
Akinyi is one of many women who have survived gender-based violence in Kenya.
Of the many cases that eventually do go public, few are ever reported.
And of the few that are recorded with the authorities, fewer still are ever prosecuted in court
