NASA's James Orengo has condemned the president for signing the Election Law Amendment Bill

He also condemned Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i for banning demos in CBDs

Siaya County Senator James Orengo has expressed the National Super Alliance’s disappointment upon news that President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed the Election Law Amendment Bill.

Speaking at Capitol Hill in Nairobi, Orengo said that they were also disappointed that the president assented to the Election offences amendment bill.

He condemned the president for taking a ‘retrogressive move’ and said that the proposed changes to election laws are meant to change Kenya into a ‘Banana republic’

The changes in election laws will see the powers of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reduced and also cement manual transmission as the primary method of relaying results.

He also condemned Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangí for banning demonstrations in the Central Business District, saying that Kenyans have a right to picket.

The acting Interior CS banned anti-IEBC demo in Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi CBDs in an effort to reduce destruction of property.

He added that they expect Kalonzo Musyoka over the weekend.
